The Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert, located in the very heart of the capital city, were completed in 1847 and are an exceptional example of architecture housing shops, cafes, art galleries, cinemas and theatres, all under one roof.

During its 150-year existence, this building has fallen into some disrepair and become subject to some deformations. It was high time to remedy these.

First of all, TCA was entrusted the task of designing the renovation of the glass structure, scrupulously respecting the original characteristics whilst using modern techniques and preserving some existing elements.

Number of arches: 444 (214 for the Galerie du Roi + 230 for the Galerie de la Reine)
Number of glazing sheets: 13,320, or an approximate surface of 2,450 m2.
Aims:

- retain the finesse and light levels of the building
- solve any tightness and stability problems
– restore the original structure
– adapt the wind bracing system
– develop a new glazing strip system

The building site will then be moved in order to proceed with the renovation of the theatres within the Galeries and the Vaudeville theatres, followed by the cinemas. New apartments, new catering areas and many other improvements will be introduced in order to revamp this gay centre in Brussels.

Under the aegis of Minister Didier Gosuin, the French Community Commission was able to gather together all of the necessary skills in order to create an ultra-modern cultural centre within an 18th century building between 1996 and 1998. This building forms an integral part of a peristyle of very rare architectural pureness.

This new fully-equipped theatre with a seating capacity of 366 has been designed within the strict limitations of the architectural legislation relating to the square in question and has been built on a small piece of land that is subject to many material and regulatory constraints. This task of ‘building recycling’ is no mean feat …

The experience gained in this area by principal contractors allowed them to draw from their complete range of expertise. The transformation of this building is exemplary of intelligent and subtle strategies (Jean Dethier).
